KIRO – an edutainment robot from the Robot Institute – is from the former category and can currently be found being put through his/her paces in Korean kindergarten classes (try saying that five times in a hurry).
Children can use wireless key cards to activate various educational games and software which will teach subjects like the English alphabet. Thankfully the Robot Institute appear to have omitted the traditional ‘kill’ response from KIRO’s programming as kids seem rather fond of hugging their new companion.
Sadly, it seems that teaching isn’t a hugely lucrative profession for robots so KIRO also has a second job working as an educational guide in museums and art galleries.
