Helen Lee is one of China’s most commercially successful designers. She opened her new store on Fumin Lu in April. We had a really nice long conversation about, of course, fashion in China. She said a lot of poignant things, but one thing I took away from the conversation that I’d like to share today was how she has implemented more tailor-made services into her business. She says that she doesn’t offer custom-clothes just to make shoppers happy; it’s more of a smart business move on her part. Even though she’s quite famous, she’s still a young designer, and doesn’t have the money to produce many pieces in every size. So, she’ll make three of each size for the racks, which shoppers can either buy or, they can order a custom-made fit for no extra charge. This is really common amongst young Chinese designers, and many other young designers all over the world.
