Edible Bus Stops Hit The West Country!

Guerrilla gardening project the Edible Bus Stop is to use the National Gardening Show at the Royal Bath & West Showground to expand.
Landscape architect Will Sandy, who launched the initiative last year in London, said he hopes the show on 31 August-2 September will help to roll the project into the West Country. He is working with Cleeve Nursery in Bristol and Brett Aggregates on this next stage.

He took his message to a wider audience this month at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show with a show garden of plants, graffiti walls, a junked taxi and phone box.

Locals and groups such as gardening clubs are being asked to nominate new sites. The winner is to be mocked up in a garden at the Bath show.

New beer aims to stir up games sponsors

A Scottish brewery has unveiled a new beer called Never Mind the Anabolics containing eight illegal performance enhancing ingredients.

BrewDog says its limited edition ale is designed to “undermine global sponsorship” for the London Olympics.

It contains creatine, guarana, lycii berries, kola nut, Gingko, matcha tea, maca powder and steroids – all banned for professional athletes.

The stunt follows controversy over restrictive sponsorship deals involving major players such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola.

James Watt, cofounder of BrewDog said: “It seems a beer laced with performance enhancing ingredients isn’t actually illegal, but it is definitely frowned upon.

“Never Mind the Anabolics is a thorn in the side of the biggest corporate beast spawned this century.

“This is the craft beer community showing the sponsors of the games the finger in the best way we know how.”

A percentage of the proceeds of the craft beer is going towards a new surfboard for a surfing dog called Abbie.

Boris’s spoof Olympic welcome

Boris Johnson's Olympics poetry recital is a hit...

London Mayor Boris Johnson delivered a specially commissioned Olympic ode – in both ancient Greek and English – at last night’s gala for the International Olympic Committee.

Well it seems Johnson’s predictably flamboyant rendition of the poem went down a storm at the event, receiving rapturous applause and upstaging performances from opera stars Domingo, Renee Fleming and Bryn Terfel and singer Paloma Faith.

Great timing, then, for YouTube favourite Cassetteboy (who has previously lampooned TV shows inlcuding The Apprentice and Dragons’ Den) to release his latest mash-up video, stitching together various of Bo-Jo’s speeches and TV appearances to create a very special Olympic welcome…

Controversial Results of Beauty Pageant Lead to Do-Over, Previous Winners Deemed “Way Too Ugly” by Public

▼From left to right: the runner-up, first place, and third place

On June 30 the Miss International Regional Qualifying Pageant was held in Chongqing, China.  However, as the winners (pictured above) were announced, backlash from scores of confused spectators and an allegation that the contest was fixed has prompted organizers to hold a second pageant.

The decision came after weeks of outrage expressed on the internet, saying that the winners “couldn’t possibly be the most beautiful women of Chongqing” or more bluntly “they’re way too ugly.” To add fuel to the fire, one judge is now declaring that he was “under pressure” to choose the three women.

Pageant organizers deny claims of match-fixing and are asserting that this second contest is not in response to the public’s comments.  Also, the previously chosen winners will remain as such and they will still move onto the national round representing Chongqing.

Organizers claim that the second contest is simply to “increase the range of contestants” meaning that now 6 women in total will move onto the next level.

Public reaction to the second contest was mixed, with some welcoming a chance “to choose the real beautiful women of Chongqing” and others claiming that extending the number of finalists is “unfair to the original winners.”

Pageant officials continue to defend their original choices, saying that “everyone has a different sense of what is beautiful” and “the winners met the international requirements of beauty.”  This begs the question; why have a second contest?  When asked this by the media, pageant organizers had no comment.

It’s a tough situation for these three ladies thrust into the international spotlight under such circumstances, and by holding a second contest the organizers are indirectly saying that they don’t have faith in their choices.  However, as of yet, there is no proof that the contest was fixed.  This may just be a matter of different strokes for different folks.

▼It seems the third place winner has been getting most of the attention. She certainly does make you look at her.

London bus does push-ups

http://www.youtube.com/embed/3PG5_bscyE4?feature=player_detailpage

An artist transformed a London doubledecker bus into an athlete doing push-ups to promote the Olympics.

Czech artist David Cerny created the unique red mechanical artwork in honour of the London 2012 games, reports Metro.

Cerny bought the six tonne bus in Holland before attaching two gigantic electrical arms which lift the body of the vehicle up and down.

Powered by an electrical engine, each push-up is accompanied by a recording of sounds evoking tough physical effort.

Mr Cerny hopes the vehicle, named the London Booster, will become the unofficial mascot of the Games.

“There is one common exercise for every sportsman in the world, and that is push-ups,” he explained.

Rollerman braves 99 hairpin bends

Rollerman /Rex

A French daredevil mastered a mountain road featuring 99 hairpin turns on a custom-made roller suit with 31 wheels.

Jean-Yves Blondeau, 42, who calls himself Rollerman, completed the stunt on Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, in south China’s Hunan province.

The suit, which he designed, features rollerblade-like wheels on the torso, back, and most of the major joints, allowing him to ride in a number of positions at speeds of up to 70mph.

Mr Blondeau sped down the 10.77 kilometre road in just 19 mins 34 sec – giving him an average speed of about 20mph, reports the Daily Mail.

Rolling part-way down the steep, tortuous mountain road, and part way down a specially installed metal track, he used his body to steer as he hurtled dangerously towards the finish.

He even felt confident enough to catch a little air from a jump set up near the bottom of the track, before crossing the finish line to exploding fireworks.

Mr Blondeau originally designed his roller suit as his graduation project at an industrial design school in Paris.

Since then, he has created 20 generations of the superhero-type outfit, ranging from basic kneepads with rollers to sophisticated full body armour like the one worn in the Tianmen Mountain stunt.
