Beer Made with Coffee from an Elephant’s Butt!

unko2

Hey all you beer lovers out there! I want to tell you about the best beer I’ve ever had. It’s a coffee stout made with elephant droppings!

Now, I know what you must be thinking; “Coffee and beer, ewww!” But really, this beer is insanely delicious.

It’s called Un, Kono Kuro which is a pun on the Japanese word for crap (unko). The name has two meanings phonetically: “Yeah, This Is Black” or “Sh!t Black.” In English it’d be like saying “Blackish, It Is” (say that really fast a few times).

This Is Really Sh#t Beer!

Shed Drink of the Week…. Clear Creek Douglas Fir Eau de Vie

Clear Creek Douglas Fir Eau de Vie

When it comes to unusual spirits, it’s hard to top Clear Creek Douglas Fir Eau de Vie. Inspired by the rare Alsatian distillate Eau de Vie de Bourgeons de Sapin, this unique tree spirit is crafted by infusing hand-picked Douglas Fir buds into clear brandy, which gets re-distilled and re-infused before being strained and bottled. Said to smell and taste like the woods, you’ll find notes of juniper, wood, vanilla, and Christmas tree in each sip. In other words, it’s as close as you can get to drinking Pine-Sol without making a call to poison control — and we mean that in the best way possible.

Something Dark And Bittersweet Is Brewing — Chocolate Beer!

8109-1-20111220194431

Produced by the Sankt Gallen Brewery based in Kanagawa Prefecture, this so-called “chocolate beer” surprisingly isn’t made from real chocolate or cacao/cocoa. It’s made mainly from a combination of high temperature roasted chocolate malt and regular roasted base malt, which gives it a distinct rich flavor, not to mention the dark chocolaty color, all quite different from the typical light, golden-colored beer that we’re accustomed to. And in case you’re wondering, many women in Japan go crazy buying chocolates (some of them quite expensive too — Pierre Hermé, Jean-Paul Hévin and Pierre Marcolini , to name just a few of the chocolate brands popular in Japan) for Valentine’s Day, hence the chocolate beer promotion at this time of year.

This year’s chocolate beer line-up was released on January 10th, and our lucky reporter had the chance to sample some of the dark, bittersweet drink and even received some tips from the folks at Sankt Gallen on how to make the most of your chocolate beer experience.

Brewer makes a hooch for pooches

A US brewery has released an alcohol free beer – just for dogs.

Dawg Grog is on sale in Bend, Oregon, where Boneyard Brewery creates its selection of bespoke beers.

Described as a ‘healthy, nutritional, liquid treat for your best friend’, the beer can be served on its own or poured over food.

The beverage is packed full of vegetables and spices including ginger, cinnamon and honey, reports Metro.

It is the brainchild of Boneyard Brewery taster Daniel Keeton, who says his own dog just can’t get enough of the stuff.

“Two things that have become part of the Bend lifestyle are beer and dogs,” Visit Bend CEO, Doug LaPlaca told KTVZ.

“So to create something that would take advantage of the two we thought was a brilliant idea.

“Initially, people have to look at the label twice. Then they ask us: “Is this really for dogs?””

Vodka-blinded man saved by whisky

Whisky /PA

A New Zealand man who went blind after drinking vodka had his sight saved – by a bottle of whisky.

Denis Duthie, 65, suddenly went blind when vodka he had been drinking reacted with his diabetes medication, reports the New Zealand Herald.

Mr Duthie, a catering tutor, had been celebrating his parents’ 50th wedding anniversary by having a few vodkas from a bottle his students had given him as a present.

But when he walked into a bedroom in his home everything suddenly went black.

“I thought it had got dark and I’d missed out on a bit of time but it was only about half-past-three in the afternoon,” he said.

“I was fumbling around the bedroom for the light switch but I’d just gone completely blind.”

Mr Duthie was rushed to Taranaki Base Hospital, where doctors thought he might have formaldehyde poisoning.

It is associated with ingesting methanol and can be treated by administering ethanol – the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages.

There wasn’t enough medical ethanol available in the hospital, so the registrar nipped down to the local off licence and picked up a bottle of whisky which was dripped straight into his stomach via a tube.

“Johnnie Walker Black Label. It was good whisky, yeah,” Mr Duthie said. “I woke up five days later and I could see as soon as I could open my eyes.”
